Harvest Donations
We will be celebrating Harvest and reflecting on how lucky we are to have plenty of food when others go hungry during Monday’s assembly. Please send donations of tinned foods to school on Monday. Please give generously. These items will be distributed to local charities. Let’s try to donate even more than last year!

Dear Parents & Carers
Improving Reading is our top priority here at Abbey. We want all of our learners to enjoy reading and to develop expert skills. Over the past two years, our reading results have been much lower than our maths results. We want to change this and for Abbey children excel in all areas.
Reading is fundamental in modern society and shapes us as critical thinkers, learners and questioning citizens. Learning to read, and reading to learn, is the foundation for future educational success. As the singular most important academic skill of our age, teachers and parents have an obligation to ensure every child is a competent reader.
Children with stronger reading comprehension sklills and a broader vocabulary are more successful academically in all areas.
Our phonics work with our youngest children is the toolkit which enables childen to develop fluency in reading. From this, we must work on understanding, comprehension and inference….becoming book detectives. You can support us by reading daily with your child and by talking to them about their book choices.
In school, all staff will be working harder than ever to promote reading and to teach reading in engaging ways.
Best wishes

Reading Challenges
Reading is the most vital learning tool your child can develop. It’s also great fun and relaxing too! National expectation and standard for attainment in reading is HIGH. It is essential that your child is encouraged to read at home, with an adult, and to select challenging books.
Many of our KS2 children are choosing books to read first thing in the morning which are well below the level required to meet the demands of the new curriculum. Let’s work together to ensure reading remains a priority for improvement.

Archaeology in Action
A team of Year 4 children had the tremendous and unique opportunity to visit a site of historical importance on Tuesday. They met archaeologists who worked on the excavation of the tomb of King Richard and learned about the tools and techniques an archaeologist uses. They were able to handle real Roman pottery (picture attached).
Some of the children tried on the heavy chain mail which the Knights Hospitallers wore. Many thanks to Mrs Jansari (a keen archaeologist herself) who facilitated this exciting learning opportunity for our children.

Many thanks to everyone who made Shraad donations to school. £175 was raised! This money will be used to buy books for our classrooms and a special label will be placed inside each book acknowledging the donation.

Dear Parents & Carers
Our school has been a hive of activity this week and as I write this post, I am eagerly anticipating our Navratri Celebrations. I will include some photographs on next week’s newsletter.
We began the week with a visit from our local PCSO and a representative from the fire service. They joined us in assembly to deliver important reminders about how we can all Celebrate Safely through Diwali, Bonfire Night and in the lead up to Christmas. It is wonderful to welcome professionals who help us and both visitors were extremely impressed by our attentive and respectful children here at Abbey.
Best wishes
