Abbey Primary Community School – Play Scheme
Abbey Primary Community School – ‘Play Scheme’ Provision
We are delighted to be able to inform you that we will be running a play scheme during the summer holiday break. The play scheme will run from 8.30 a.m. – 5.30 p.m. each day on the following dates.
Monday 17th July 2017 to Friday 11th August 2017
The cost of the facility will be £80.00 per week. This does not include the cost of any day trips and external activities such as bowling etc. The fees will be payable in advance and no refunds will be given. Children will need to bring their own packed lunch each day but we will provide fruit and snacks.
Please ensure you bring your child no later than 9.30 am from the Community Wing entrance on Bruin Street.
Activities
We will be providing various activities throughout the week: art & craft, cooking, sports, outdoor activities, badge making and table tennis and other sports. Children will also have the opportunity to play on the Ipads!
Parents may be able to reclaim up to 80% of their fees through working tax credit. Please see Mrs Dina Foster (Play Scheme Leader) for more information on this. Please complete the attached booking form to reserve a place for your child. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Healthy Packed Lunches
Our Vice Chair of Governors (Sangita Chauhan) was in school last week to look at our lunchtime provision and was disappointed by the lack of healthy balance in many of the packed lunches being eaten.
Balance is everything – we are not saying don’t eat crisps or biscuits! However, many packed lunches contain no fruit or vegetables at all.
From Tuesday 21st March we will be monitoring packed lunches every day to ensure that the nutritional needs of pupils are being catered for.
According to NHS choices a balanced lunchbox should contain:
- Starchy foods like bread, rice, potatoes or pasta.
- Protein foods like meat, fish, eggs or beans.
- A dairy item, like cheese or yogurt.
- Vegetables or salad and a portion of fruit.
The Children’s Food Trust says that only around one in a hundred packed lunches in England meet children’s nutritional needs. If your child is having a packed lunch, are you providing a balanced and healthy option?
P.E Kit Reminder
Dear All – this is the letter that will go to all parents/carers from today if their child does not have the correct PE kit. This is part of a whole school push to further raise standards and expectations in all areas of the education we provide at Abbey Primary.
Dear Parent/Carer,
PE KIT
I am writing to let you know that today _______________________ did not have the correct Abbey PE kit of:
** White Polo/T-shirt
** Black PE Shorts/Jogging Bottoms/Leggings Sports Trainers or Black Plimsolls
As indicated in my letter of Tuesday 14th March 2017, pupils who fail to bring in the correct PE kit will be required to borrow school kit.
Failure to bring the correct PE kit results in a letter home and could also trigger a break time detention.
Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit with them.
Changing for PE not only gives the lessons importance, but is also very important in terms of personal hygiene.
Thank you for your support.

Message From Mr Foster
Dear Parents/Carers
Thanks to everyone who came to enjoy Thursday’s brilliant Bollywood Night!
We are very lucky to have such generous businesses in the Belgrave area. Many thanks to Jay Jalyan, Bobby’s, Mirch Masala, Popats, Shiva and Sharmilee for providing such wonderful Indian cuisine.
Thanks to Mr Whippy for the 300 ice creams and to the Lounge Café Bar & Restaurant and KDM Photographers for providing the prizes for the competitions. We are truly grateful to you all.
Our Apprentice winner – Priya – will be headteacher for the day on Friday 24th March. She will be assisted by her three Deputy Heads – Diya, Kanisha and Naailah.
They are wonderfully mature and dedicated young people who absolutely deserve this honour.
Mrs Rehman and Mrs Ali will be leaving at the end of this term to go on maternity leave – Miss Lynsey Wiggins will be taking over in Year 4 and Mrs Nimisha Khunti/Mrs Jockovic in Year 5.
School improvement is continuous at Abbey and this week we are undertaking another round of observations, to ensure that the quality of teaching is as high as it can possibly be.
Have a good week

Message from Mr Foster
Dear Parents/Carers
What a busy five days we had last week, with the Apprentice fun fair stalls, Year 2’s great Fire of London and visits to see authors at the Leicester Tigers.
We are also in the middle of another strong push to maximise the quality of teaching in every class across the school.
Keep next Thursday free for the Apprentice Finale – Bollywood Night! Tickets are on sale from the school office today – with a maximum of 200 places. Book early to avoid disappointment! Have a great week!

Swimming and PE
A reminder to all parents that PE (Physical Education) and swimming in Years 4-6 are compulsory parts of the national curriculum and pupils must take part. Obviously, they must also be appropriately dressed for PE with a change of clothes (kit) and footwear, e.g. trainers or plimsolls.
Birthday Celebrations – Healthy Food
Birthday Celebrations in school – Thank you to all parents and carers who are following the new governor guidelines and bringing either healthy food or educational gifts to celebrate your child’s birthday.
