Dear All
It is a key part of our work at Abbey to give pupils a ‘voice’ in what happens. Every pupil should have a leadership role or responsibility – which could vary from being a class monitor to being on the School Council.
School councils provide a basis for active learning of important life skills, such as speaking and listening skills, teamwork, emotional literacy, problem-solving, moral reasoning skills, self-esteem and self-confidence. School and class councils enable pupils to have a voice and to understand that their opinions count.
This year the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 School Councils have their own ‘opinion boards’ outside the staff room. Pupils can ‘post it’ their thoughts at any time. Take a look when you have the chance.

Why Should Children Excercise?
Children have to be active every day. Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health. Today, research shows that the importance of physical activity for children is stronger than ever. For example, medical researchers have observed that highly active children are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer of the colon, obesity, and coronary heart disease later in life.
Message from My Foster
The school has received extra government funding this year for PE and sport. We will be investing a substantial portion of this into the Abbey Sports Foundation (ASF) – their pictures appear later in the newsletter. The ASF work every Friday afternoon on a programme which develops their coaching skills – they also have weekly fitness sessions on a Monday afternoon. From the second half of the autumn term the ASF students will be coaching children from F2 to Year 6 at lunchtimes and during PE lessons. The aim of the project is to maximise the impact of the funding in developing health, fitness and sporting skills amongst all the pupils at Abbey Primary.
